As I walked the narrow width of the circular, flat island, I was fascinated with the rugged landscape of coral and palms. Standing on piles of white coral, it was apparent why so many people flock to this part of French Polynesia to explore the rich coral reefs surrounding these islands. It's interesting to hear about the excitement for the growing trend of zero-impact travel—cooking over a fire, sleeping in an unheated room, and using locally sourced foods. This approach of going back to basics has been on the rise for several years. One nature-hostel manager I met while photographing this series put it quite bluntly: "Twenty years ago people said I was crazy for not having satellite TV installed. The ocean near Anchorage experiences extreme tides, resulting in a constantly changing landscape of water, ice, and glacial mudflats. While it isn't safe for boating or exploring the mudflats on foot, I've always loved how that keeps it wild. Even as a lifelong Alaskan, I find the scenic drive along Turnagain Arm to be a continuous source of awe: The otherworldly views are never the same twice.
